What We Do

The Abraham Kuykendall Chapter, NSDAR, actively promotes patriotism and American history in our community . We also support education in schools and recognize outstanding students. Listed below are ongoing chapter activities in our three main areas of projects.

Promoting Patriotism

  • Support of the Charles George Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Asheville through donations and monetary support
  • Support to local veterans in area assisted living homes with lap blankets for Veterans Day and service hats at Christmas
  • Purchased a bench for the Veterans Memorial Garden at Elizabeth House
  • Observe Memorial Day and Veterans Day events in our community
  • Welcoming new citizens at the Naturalization Ceremony
  • Support the NSDAR Project Patriot

Historic Preservation

  • Attend commemorative events to mark the graves of local Patriots

Education

  • Present Constitution Week programs with members dressed in colonial costumes
  • Constitution Week displays in local libraries
  • Honoring community members and organizations with the NSDAR Community Service Award
  • American History Essay Contests for students in fifth to eighth grades and Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest for students in ninth to twelfth grades
  • Sponsor Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) Awards to cadets at North Henderson High School
  • Sponsor DAR Good Citizens Essay contest for high school seniors
  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children
  • Support a local second-grade classroom with back-to-school supplies
  • Support Chemawa Indian School with a quilt drive
